Charles Xavier is the man that brings it all together. Without his vision, then there wouldn’t be any drama or action as it sought out to live happily among humans. His vision attracted many others as did his natural ability to help others.
Emma Frost is an interesting character in large part due to her diversity as she has never stayed with one group for an extended period of time. However, most will probably remember her as a villain with Sebastian Shaw and the Hellfire Club yet she did join the X-Men at some time.
Ororo Munroe is one of the longest lasting X-Men and often one of the leaders in given situations. She is also one of the more fleshed out characters of the bunch as she had plenty of back story and plenty of her own struggles that didn’t include the X-Men.

His real name however is Scott Summers and he has one of the more devastating powers of the X-Men. Cyclops is able to shoot a ruby colored concussive force out of his eyes.
Cable is one of the more popular characters albeit he has a weaker story than most but his powers and Terminator-like attitude make him a fan favorite. This inclusion marks the second big villain of the X-Men universe, Mister Sinister. Sinister possesses enhanced durability and an extended lifespan thanks to Apocalypse.
Warren Worthington was one of the first five members of the X-Men and one the more intriguing characters. His powers are simple, he can fly like an angel due to the fact that he has wings that protrude out from his shoulder blades.
